What is hybrid energy?
A hybrid energy system starts with a carefully-considered mix of energy sources such as sun and wind, an alternator/dynamo, generator or your mains supply. The energy is stored in batteries and you can use it at any time. For example, you can use this system to generate your own green energy, but it can equally well function as a back-up system during a power failure. With a hybrid energy system, you are certain to have energy at all times!
On-grid system
An on-grid system means that your (PV) system is connected to the electricity grid. This is the case in most homes.
If your installation is connected to the grid, you have to take into account the Synergrid regulations.
Your solar panels do not have to supply all the energy in your home. The power grid can always come to the rescue where necessary. When your system generates surplus solar energy, it will be fed back into the grid.
If you do not have a meter that runs backwards, it is important to feed as little solar energy back into the grid as possible and to use as much of the generated power as possible.
One option to help you do this is our S³ home battery. S³ thuisbatterij

Off-grid system
An off-grid system is one that is not connected to the electricity grid, so the system functions entirely autonomously. The energy from the solar panels is stored in batteries for use when the sun isn´t shining. In Belgium, the winter months are long and dark, and a generator is often necessary as a back-up to make it through this period. Another solution is our semi off-grid system. Increasingly, holiday cottages, tiny houses, etc. are entirely off-grid. The consumption here is often lower than in our own principal place of residence and we generally spend less time in them during the winter.
We develop an off-grid system that is always tailored specifically to the individual customer. It is important to have a clear picture of the consumers and the desired autonomy. The Victron Energy system planner can help you with a first calculation of how many solar panels and batteries you will need, and how large the converter capacity has to be. This produces only a rough indication, however, therefore don´t hesitate to further discuss the results with us so that we can do a customised calculation for you.
Semi off-grid system
Grid-connected inverters always have to be type-approved by Synergrid. Only a limited number of Victron Energy inverters meet all the requirements, which means that we come up against a number of limitations in grid-connected installations. The many constraints imposed by Synergrid also restrict creative solutions.
Our semi off-grid system is a solution for this. With this system, we work off-grid as much as possible; completely off-grid is unrealistic in Belgium. So a generator often has to be provided, but these are expensive, noisy and polluting. On the other hand, the grid is still the cheapest power supply.
With a balanced semi off-grid energy system, we operate off-grid for 8-9 months per year, and only use the grid during the dark winter months. When the switch-over occurs, the off-grid system is first completely disconnected before consumers are connected to the grid; this is the 'break before make' principle. The interruption is so short that it does not adversely affect electrical appliances, and everything can just keep on working without a hitch. With our automatic transfer switch, we are no longer covered by the Synergrid rules, and are free to choose the devices.
This Transfer Switch is suitable for both a single-phase and 3-phase system and is available in 40A or 80A. 40A 80A
