An increasing number of Victron installations require advanced and intelligent control. With Node-RED, complex energy flows can be managed in a clear and flexible way. When faced with such challenges, you can rely on us for the necessary support.
Node-RED is a visual programming environment that enables the development of custom logic on top of Victron systems. It provides solutions for situations where standard settings are insufficient, for example for intelligent load control, optimisation of self-consumption, or limiting grid injection. Within larger Venus OS installations, Node-RED also makes it possible to combine data from multiple sources and respond to it dynamically.
In practical terms, the following applications can be realised using Node-RED:
- Smart control of heat pumps and boilers via Shelly relays, aligned with available solar energy and battery status
- Dynamic control of the Victron EV Charger based on a defined grid setpoint, ensuring charging without unwanted grid import or export
- Advanced logic for load control, battery management, and grid interaction in complex installations
Customers who encounter difficulties with the configuration or programming of Node-RED, or who have a specific energy-related requirement that can be solved using Node-RED, can turn to us for assistance. We actively think along with you about the desired functionality and also take care of the actual programming.
A recently completed project illustrates the possibilities. It involved a three-phase Victron system with LiFePO₄ batteries, in which three hot water buffer tanks with electric heating elements are intelligently controlled. The objective was to charge and heat both the lithium batteries and the buffer tanks as efficiently as possible using solar energy, while minimising interaction with the electricity grid. Control was focused on maximising the use of solar surpluses, with the additional goal of ensuring the batteries are sufficiently charged by the evening. At the same time, the electric heating elements in the hot water tanks are activated as early as possible during the day as soon as adequate solar production is available.
This type of custom solution is typical for applications where Node-RED offers clear added value. By combining our in-depth knowledge of Victron systems with hands-on experience in Node-RED programming, we provide targeted support for both new projects and the optimisation of existing installations.
If you have questions about the possibilities of Node-RED or would like to have a specific application reviewed, we are ready to analyse this together with you and provide a tailored proposal, including an estimate of the required programming time.
